DJI Ronin-S is one of the most popular video tools on the market, and for good reason. It is a three-axis stabilizer designed for SLR and mirrorless cameras that enables creators to shoot stabilized videos with one hand while on the move.

This gimbal has received positive reviews from professionals and beginners alike who want to develop their cinematographic skills and create movie-like results.

If you are planning to rent or buy a DJI Ronin-S, in this article we would like to give you a series of tips to get the most out of this gimbal.

First things first

Calibrate your gimbal. To compensate for movement correctly, the DJI's monitored “arms” have to be calibrated in accordance with the weight and dimensions of the camera we install. If we don't calibrate properly, once you turn on the gimbal, the sensors of the Ronin S will try to compensate for the weight by thinking that the camera it carries is bigger or smaller, and the motorized arms will move randonmly.

Monopod / Mini tripod

By attaching a monopod to the bottom of the DJI Ronin S, you can achieve higher crane shots once you extend it to its full length.

On the other hand, if you use a mini tripod as a rear grip, you can use your gimbal to get spectacular and different videos from a ground level perspective.

In both cases, remember to use the tilt lock mode on the Ronin-S to ensure proper operation with the engines.

Follow Focus

If you have bought / rented your DJI Ronin with the Follow Focus control mechanism, you will have many creative possibilities. For example, if you place the gear around your lens, you can zoom by using the in-focus crank on your gimbal. Likewise, if you have a variable neutral density filter and you position the mechanism around it, you will be able to control the light manually.

Track / Motion control

Take full advantage of the Track / Motion Control option to create stunning shots. With these tools we can program the points to which we want the camera to go, how long it will take to move between these points and how long it will stop before going to the next point. You can program up to 10 waypoints.

Divide and conquer

If your project involves doing some complex camera movements, we recommend dividing the camera operator job into two people. This way, one can control the body of the gimbal, while the co-pilot can control the movements of the gimbal from the DJI Ronin app.
