Canon EOS M50 Review

1. Design

The Canon EOS M50 has the appearance of a small SLR. Its body weighs approximately 387g. Despite its compact size, it is a camera that fits perfectly in the hand thanks to its generous grip. It does not have too many buttons, the basic ones to make it a very intuitive camera.

It has an electronic viewfinder with a sharp resolution of 2.36 million dots and a fully articulated 3" touch screen. This screen can be turned to the side and rotated to achieve the most suitable angle, including in a selfie angle. This makes it ideal for vlogging or creating YouTube videos.

2. 24.1 MP APS-C sensor and DIGIC 8 processor

The Canon EOS M50 has a 24.1 MP APS-C sensor and a DIGIC 8 processor that provides great image quality, with good dynamic range and excellent color fidelity. It can provide photos with a resolution of 6000 x 4000 px.

It also has a sensitivity range that goes from ISO 100 to ISO 25,600, which can be expanded to 51,200. This means that the Canon EOS M50 has a good ability to capture images in low light conditions.

3. Dual Pixel Autofocus

The M50's autofocus system is also one of its standout features. It has a dual pixel autofocus system with 143 points that covers practically 80% of the sensor, helping to achieve a very precise and fast focus.

In addition, this system includes Canon's Eye AF, a face and eye detection system, although the latter can only be used in AF-S mode, not in continuous mode (AF-S Eye detection mode).

With its autofocus system you have the option of touching and dragging the autofocus point with your thumb when using the electronic viewfinder.

It should be noted that this system has a sensitivity of -2 EV, which means that it is able to focus correctly even in poor lighting conditions.

4. Video quality: 4K at 24fps / 1080p at 60fps

The EOS M50 has been enabled with the function of recording videos in 4K resolution for cinematic high definition, including the ability to take 4K images in a time-lapse. However in 4K the maximum frame rate is 24 frames and there is a 1.6x crop in the video, so the footage does not use the full width of the sensor. Another negative point is that the dual pixel autofocus system is not available when shooting in 4K, so we will have to settle for contrast detection autofocus.

Instead, you can record video in Full HD quality up to 60fps, where these limitations do not exist.

On the other hand, the Canon EOS M50 has a 5-axis digital stabilization system, ideal for stabilizing handheld recordings and avoiding distortion.

5. Other features

• New RAW format: Its new CR3 format is compatible with the main development programs. And in addition to better information management, it has a very interesting feature: the excellent compression of the raw image.

• Connectivity: Integrated WiFi, NFC and Bluetooth connection, with which you can view and edit the images captured directly from the camera or in the comfort of your smartphone, tablet or any other device, and then share them immediately on social networks.

• Available Lenses: The EOS M50 is typically sold with Canon's EF-M 15-45mm f / 3.5-6.3 IS STM retractable lens. However, the camera is compatible with the catalog of lenses for the Canon M system, which although it is not very vast, broadly covers the most common range. There are also third-party options (such as Tamron and Samyang) and, in addition to these, you can also fit regular Canon EF lenses via Canon's optional EF-EOS M mount adapter.
